I like television. There’s so much good stuff on right now more than I have time to watch. Specifically, I like the end of the summer and the beginning of the new television season that begins in September. It’s like going back to school and seeing your friends who lived to far away from you and who you couldn’t see all summer. And…getting to meet the new kids who you may like or not.
This is the first big week back. So much to DVR. Jess and I generally have similar tastes, though she veers off toward reality while I have a soft spot for sci-fi and quirky. She’s all about the guilty pleasure, train wreck of America’s Next Top Model. I’m one of the 8 people who watched every episode of Pushing Daisies.
What we’ve failed to get into and will have to catch on disc is Mad Men and Breaking Bad. It’s not due to lack of desire…it’s a matter of priorities and hours in the day. We can only consume so much media. Plus, our three year old tends to drive our selections and limits our primary viewing to the window after he goes to bed and before we head that way too.
So…new shows that I am interested in (or will at least give a trial viewing):
Community: Already viewed. I think the pilot was only slightly above average and really a highly unlikely premise. That said, I think the casting and chemistry was great. I’m also a sucker for Joel McHale and Chevy Chase. I’ll definitely come back for more. But they need to find a way to get more John Oliver into the show.
Flash Forward: This one is a real challenge for me. I know I want to watch it. The challenge is that my DVR is already occupied at that time (with Survivor and Bones). I’m hoping that ABC shifts it to Hulu so I can catch it online.
Modern Family: Sure…why not. Mockumentary…seems to be the thing since the rise of The Office and reality TV.
Cougar Town: Terrible, terrible, terrible title. But…it’s from the folks who brought us Scrubs so I’m willing to give it a shot.
That’s about it. I just checked the list of new network shows and I don’t see anything else that’s really of that much interest to me. This should work out nicely. Aside from the conflict I mentioned, Jess and I shouldn’t have a problem DVRing what we want and also not be overloaded with content we’ll never watch.
Of the new cable shows, I can only think of two that will be on must see list: The Prisoner on AMC and Stargate: Universe on scyfy. They don’t begin for a few months. I’m fairly certain some of the shows I’m adding will be canceled which will free up space for these extra shows.
One more thing…The Jay Leno Show. I’ve watched. It’s not doing it for me. Jay looks uncomfortable chatting without a desk to lean on or use as prop. It’s his old Tonight Show…just earlier. I’m finding that if there’s nothing on I want to watch, I’m just not gravitating to his new show. Sorry.
